The Accidental Seamstress
Elizabeth Chandler Designs was created somewhat by accident due to the frequent requests of friends. I was in a cluster of weddings in my early twenties, and accumulated a decent number of gowns. Rather than being mocked by a closet full of bridesmaid dresses, I actively sought out new uses for them.
I wanted something that would honor the friendship and memories the dress symbolized, as well as a way to maximize my investment in so many styles of fabric. Elegant evening bags, and accessories that would be practical for everyday use, seemed like the best answer. So I began using my bridesmaid dresses to make purses for my newlywed friends. Before long, those friends began asking me to make purses for them out of their own bridesmaid dresses, and the requests increased exponentially as word spread of this unique way of commemorating special occasions.
Meaningful Gifts Matter
As a bride, you spend hours toiling over the details of the day, including the color and style of dress that your friends will wear. Wouldn’t you want a memento that represented your decisions? Something like a cocktail purse made of the fabric you carefully chose would not only be a personal gift, but a practical one.
The Options Are Endless
Do you have a colorful old gown that’s a little out of style? Why not turn it into a sash to spice up an unremarkable black dress? Do you have a favorite sweater that found its way into the dryer too many times? Why not turn it into a unique handbag? Do you or your children have drawers full of memorable T-shirts or sports jerseys? Why not turn them into cozy T-shirt quilts?
