The Great Tote Bag Challenge: Final Post

It took several months, but I’m finally finished with The Great Tote Bag Challenge! I now have 9 super cute bags to sell in my Etsy shop and I learned so much in the process. My sewing speed has increased as well. Maybe I’ll try the challenge again on some other patterns, as it seems like that’s the only way i’ll get motivated enough to build up an inventory.

Yep, that’s right…I now have an Etsy shop! I finally have enough inventory to validate opening a virtual storefront. Currently I’m only selling tote bags, but soon I’ll be listing some of my ceramic plates. Stay tuned to see what other exciting creations I’ll be selling.

The Great Tote Bag Challenge, part 2

A few weeks ago I embarked on “The Great Tote Bag Challenge.” This was an effort to have an inventory for my soon to be new Etsy shop. It’s been a slow process, but I’m getting through these totes and duffels. Here’s a picture of my latest bags.

The Great Tote Bag Challenge!

Lately I’ve been thinking about taking Elizabeth Chandler Designs in a new direction. I haven’t quite put all the pieces together in my mind, but I do know it involves more inventory. The first step to acquiring more inventory is to make it! So…I’ve embarked on The Great Tote Bag Challenge! My goal is to make 9 bags, 6 totes and 3 duffel bags. I found some really great Robert Kaufman and M’Liss fabric and set to work.

Here’s a picture of my stash after cutting but before sewing. I may have bitten off more than I can chew.

Harper’s Overnight Bag

One of my co-workers asked me to make an overnight bag for her daughter. Follow along as I make Harper’s bag:

The fabric she picked out was a beautiful red suede and some georgeous upholstery weight fabric with horses. The lining was a shimmery cotton. Usually I work with light weight cotton, but for this project I thoroughly enjoyed working with some heavier fabrics.

I try not to use too many pins for fear of damaging the fabric. Here I’m using a bacon press and some canned food to help me cut the fabric.

After cutting all the pieces out I sew the front pieces together and line up the handles.

Each of the side pieces have a pocket. Can you find where it is? I try to line it up perfectly with the back piece.

An overnight back just isn’t complete without an inside zipper pocket. Here I’m sewing the zipper to the lining.

The most tricky part of making this bag is sewing the sides to the front and back — I have to use pins to keep everything in place to sew.

The bag is constructed and the lining is ready to be hand sewn inside.
