Knitting Sampler

A few weeks ago I picked up a new hobby…Knitting! I don’t know what I’m thinking, I don’t even have time for my old hobbies. But, I love to learn new things and my main reason for learning to knit is that I can do it in front of the TV. After working all day it’s really hard for me to get motivated to sew or wedge some clay. Knitting allows me to relax and still get in some crafty time, all while spending some time with the hubby in front of the tube. My local knitters guild hosted the Knit Inn and I took a beginner’s knitting class. Boy, was it over my head! The description of the class stated that you would learn several different stitches. Apparently I misunderstood b/c you were supposed to already know the stitches going in to the class. Thankfully both the teacher and students were patient with me while I trudged along. In the weeks since the class I finally finished the project we were supposed to do in the hour long class.

The stitches in the sampler are: Garter, Purl, Stockinette, Rib Stitch, Small Seed, Large Seed and Box Stitch. I haven’t learned the crosswise rib, cable or the dot stitch.

The Pottery Kiln

Recently my husband surprised me with a pottery kiln! I’ve dabbled with pottery since college, but haven’t really been able to practice the craft. Most pottery classes are for the beginner to intermediate potter, but after a while I got tired of paying for an entire class just to use the kiln. How many pinch pots can a person have! In order for a person to become good at something you eventually have to invest in your own equipment. My husband found this 20+ year old electric kiln and jumped at the chance to buy it. I was a little leary at first, but the Kiln Doctor assured me that the kiln was in very good shape. Our garage was already wired for the proper voltage so all in all there was very little financial expense. The true test would come when we actually fired clay in the kiln. I took a trip to Highwater Clays in Asheville, NC and decided on some white Raku clay and several Amaco glazes.

The Jazzercise Workout Review

If you watch Glee, you probably saw this week’s episode featuring Gweneth Paltrow. One of the scenes shows Gweneth wearing a leotard, tights and legwarmers while leading a Jazzercise class. I’m all about the “shout out” to Jazzercise but I hate that the writers portrayed the workout in this light. It wasn’t necessarily derogatory, just unfairly stereotypical. It seems as if some Americans think of Jazzercise as though the workouts are stuck in the 80′s and only for old people. I’m here to tell you it just ain’t so! I’ve been attending Jazzercise classes for the better part of 13 years. My mom got me hooked on Jazzercise when I was in college and have been Jazzercising ever since. Jazzercise was founded by Judi Sheppard Missett back in 1969. Since then:

The international franchise business has grown to host a network of 7,800 instructors teaching more than 32,000 classes weekly in 32 countries.

Today, Judi is the Chief Executive Officer and her daughter Shana Missett Nelson serves as the President of Jazzercise, Inc. Judi choreographs all the dance routines, which fuse jazz dance, resistance training, Pilates, Yoga, and kickboxing movements. All instructors must be certified by Jazzercise, which includes training in exercise physiology. I don’t know about you, but it comforts me to know that when I workout my body moves correctly and that the instructors will know the difference. The routines are easy to learn and are combined with the latest music whether its hip hop, rock, country, folk, or jazz. You name it, we’ve danced to it! The 60 minute Jazzercise class format uses a bell curve to help you monitor your heart rate or rather your “perceived exertion.” You start your way up the curve with a warm-up routine and then progress on to the top with a 30 minute cardio workout. As you come down the curve you conclude with several stretching and body sculpting routines. These moves could include weights, tubes, exercise balls or just using your body as resistance. The bottom line is that Jazzercise is a fun total body workout!

2 Large Totes

2 Totes Finished! I’m working my way through The Great Tote Bag Challenge and here are pictures of my finished projects. Only 7 more bags to go.

I don’t know what I was thinking, but I decided to quilt these two bags. Love the look, hate the process. I’ve quilted this same bag pattern before, click here to see how its done.

The Great Tote Bag Challenge!

Lately I’ve been thinking about taking Elizabeth Chandler Designs in a new direction. I haven’t quite put all the pieces together in my mind, but I do know it involves more inventory. The first step to acquiring more inventory is to make it! So…I’ve embarked on The Great Tote Bag Challenge! My goal is to make 9 bags, 6 totes and 3 duffel bags. I found some really great Robert Kaufman and M’Liss fabric and set to work.

Here’s a picture of my stash after cutting but before sewing. I may have bitten off more than I can chew.

Tracey Broome Designs

RSS feeds have opened up a whole new world for me (click here to get my feed). I’ve thoroughly enjoyed following the creative expressions of American artists. There are so many unique crafts out there that my creative juices are overflowing. I recently ran across the work of Tracey Broome, who is a potter from nearby North Carolina. By looking at her barn sculptures, you can almost feel the country air on your face. Here are a few pictures of her work. Click on the pictures to go to her website.

Sew, Mama, Sew! Pillow Month

I’ve recently fallen in love with the Sew, Mama, Sew! website and blog. Their shop contains the latest fabric, patterns, and notions to keep any sewing enthusiast “window shopping” for hours. Multiple contributors bring fresh ideas and easy to follow sewing tutorials to their blog. In December several well known sewing bloggers posted their predictions for 2011. I loved reading their visions about what “Will Be Hot” and can completely see some of these ideas coming true! I especially enjoyed reading about the up and coming sewers, and hope my name will be on their short list one day. February was pillow month! Followers could post pictures of their pillow creations and there were also several tutorials on pillow making techniques and pillow embellishing. See Below for a few of my favorites. Baby Shower Diaper Wreath

A few weeks ago I went to a baby shower where the host made an adorable wreath. The wreath was made out of baby diapers! Well, I just had to try it for myself. My cousin and his wife are having triplets, and their baby shower was the perfect time to experiment. Follow along as I make the wreath. By the way, it was super easy.

Colette Patterns Spring Palette Challenge

My husband has introduced me to RSS feeds and since then I’ve been following Colette Patterns. Recently they challenged their readers to start thinking about their spring palette. I’ve never been much for planning or organizing my sewing projects. I just make what I want, when I want. In order to have a more complete wardrobe, including accessories I decided to take this challenge and see where it takes me. My palette is below, you can also see it on Colette Patterns website. I’m not sure if I will be able to sew all of these designs this year, but I’ll definitely try. My problem, is that I start a project and then I see something else I want to try in the meantime. I usually end up with several unfinished projects in my closet.
