My husband and I lived in DC for a few years after college. Unfortunately, one of the perils of living on Capitol Hill was a broken car window and a stolen bike. I had just bought a brand new Wal-Mart special, a bike computer, and a cute little basket for the rear luggage rack. Even though it was a cheap bike and extremely heavy, I was disappointed. So now a few years later and living in a biking mecca, I desperately need (er… want) a bike. Instead of going down the purchasing path again, I decided to resurrect my childhood bike from the depths of my parents garage. This bike was the “big-kid” bike I received when I outgrew my small elementary bike. I suppose it was cool back in the late 80′s, but now the color is faded, the seat is painful, the tires are completely destroyed, and it’s really just junk.
Here’s a picture of the bike before…
The picture makes it look better than it really is.
Here I’ve stripped off the wires for the brakes and shifters
and taken off the seat.
And here is the frame after being stripped completely.
I’m spray painting it blue.
Here is the finished product (and a kitty)
I think it turned out very well, and I saved at least $150.
This is my husband’s retro bike he found at a used sporting goods store
